Our Mission

Have you realised that no courses, books, articles, videos or training materials exist for game testing? With every tester being self-taught and every company testing in silo, there is a severe lack of standardisation in this industry.

Our mission is to document an industry benchmark of what good game testing looks like. A benchmark which can be used as an external reference guide to help teams self-assess, learn and grow. We are here to publish how the most successful modern game teams conduct their testing. No longer kept in silo, we’re creating a standard of knowledge to be used by everyone.

For the first time ever, game test teams have training materials that are directly applicable to their work, no longer having to substitute software testing training courses in their place and translate these learnings into game projects. Our focus is on test areas unique to games.

Our more holistic goal is to help individuals and teams realise their full potential within the game testing discipline, and in doing so create a more professional, technical, standardised, respected and prosperous discipline. Through doing so, more testers can enjoy a long and fulfilling career dedicated to the subject of game testing.

This is who we are. This is Modern Game Testing

How we can help you

Embedded Test Teams

Testing within the development office has the largest potential for testing greatness and your team can realise that potential with our content. You have access to the game source and direct communication with other disciplines and project management, but are you making best use of them? You are also defining the test strategy for all publisher and external test teams on the project, but is it well managed?

Modern Game Testing helps embedded test teams understand and implement pragmatic steps towards better quality at source. You will learn how to start preventing bugs before they are created. You will learn how to influence wider quality practices like design reviews, code reviews, playtests, use of personal builds, and guide the definition of done during the earliest stages of development. Our training focuses on how best to support the development process, so other disciplines are invested in the test effort.

Our training teaches the technical skills to understand branching strategies and recognise them as a quality measure. It enables you to understand the basics of code structure so that you can use simple techniques to assess feature risk and understand feature logic without asking the feature author. By increasing technical competence just a little, your team can benefit greatly.

Publisher Test Teams

We recognise that many testers work in large centralised testing departments, separated from the game development studios that they support and so have limited exposure to certain topics.

With our training, you can learn about source code control, branching, agile development, waterfall development, working in sprints and many more skills which only embedded testers have exposure to. This knowledge will help you better understand the work within the development team, improving the effectiveness in your part of the overall test strategy through a better understanding of upstream project activities.

We believe cohesion with other game development disciplines is an essential part of any test activity, something which publisher test teams rarely have the opportunity to improve, since their teams are made entirely of the testing discipline. With our training, you will better understand each game discipline: how they work, their skills, their interests and the nuances of working alongside them effectively. Modern Game Testing will teach you the context that other testers gain naturally working within cross-discipline development pods in the developer team.

Testing Service Providers

Our content doesn’t just provide tactical test knowledge, it can help you understand your clients, those game teams that you provide for. How do they operate internally? What is important to them? Where are they strong and where do they need the most support? We have answers to these questions and more.

Modern game testing provides a complete picture of the business of game testing, detailing the role of each test team on a project. With this, you can better understand your teams’ part in the holistic test strategy for a project and use this knowledge to provide better services.

With our training on test planning and strategy, you can create QA analyst roles in your business and add test plan creation to your suite of services, offering a more complete package of test planning and test execution.
